This new AW 24 collection is inspired by My favorite things, a song from the 1959 musical The Sound of Music. This song famously appears in a scene in the film when the von Trapp children are frightened during a thunderstorm, and Maria, played by Julie Andrews, sings it to comfort them. In My Favorite Things, Maria describes all the things that make her feel better when she is sad, like “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copperkettles and warm woollen mittens”.
This song is also the title of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane’s seventh album My favorite things released in 1961. The album features no jazz standards but five reworked popular tunes by the likes of Gershwin and Porter. Coltrane said that “you’ve got to go back at the old things and see them in a new light”.
With these two references, we have asked some children about their favorite things that help them feel better and we have chosen the following: little donkeys, libraries, bagels, pickles and whistling a song.
Which are yours?
